Top Cop: Dean Walker

TOP COP: OFC. DEAN WALKER
Wednesday, October 1, 2014 a Denver man and his wife called the Denver Police as a last resort for help with their son. Their son has Aspergers, and was growing increasingly upset due to some changes in his environment. The family had just moved to a new apartment, and was short on funds. The father was two days from payday and the family was without food. In comes Denver Police Department District Three, Southeast Denver Officer Dean Walker.
Using his various skills, he calmly talked the frustrated young man down, but he didn’t stop there. Dean recognized how frustrating hunger can make anyone and took the young man to get something to eat. The family was beyond grateful for Dean’s kindness, and calming demeanor. The young man’s father later wrote in to thank Dean. He and his wife are sure that he kept the situation from escalating, and that he turned a bad day for their son, into a great one with a this simple act.

Good Cops

I've not been shy about sharing videos of police brutality, but by the same token, I share the good ones when I come across them, as well.

The link below is simply heart-warming and wonderful.

Brave Little Girl

There are so many horrible reports in the news today about scary cops, frightened children, and poor parenting.  This situation took place in a nearby community and the story just made my heart smile!  The circumstances couldn't have turned out any better . . .

An Unexpected Happy Ending

So often, we are unaware of the lingering problems that persist following a storm.  In the immediate aftermath, we see the devastation, but for those who aren't personally affected, current articles are read and prayers are offered.  The headlines move to a new crisis in a matter of days.  Meanwhile, displaced people, displaced pets, injuries that linger, and the struggle to rebuild lives take place quietly outside of the headlines.

The link below just brought a smile as I read it.

Multi-Tasking . . . Multi-Talented

Not only is Gerald Davis an awesome storm spotter, he is quite the chef.  The "Frugal Gourmet" did not make the video connetion with "Cooking with Gerry," but we are so pleased to feature "Cooking With Gerry" in this edition of the Goshen Gazette.  His hard work this week-end is the feature story in the weather section of Goshen Gazette, but his Parmesan trout is the exclusive feature in "Delectably Kosher" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DLaW8FASI4&feature=youtu.be

Praise

This young man lived what we read about in Acts 16:25-26.  And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto G-d: and the prisoners heard them.  And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

Since I Don't Believe in Coincidence

I usually try to find one of those "awe" videos or "Good Samaritan" reports in the news to share here, but this week, our very own contributors shared a special awakening moment that certainly carried a theme.

I was speaking with one of the contributors this week on the phone when she and I both shared the observation that Capitol Hill was not the answer, and we discussed what individuals could do to affect change.  It was at that time I shared with her the purchase of a round kitchen table, I'd made three years ago, specifically for a working ministry to gather.  We also discussed the fact that while America divides politically, both sides are indeed wings of the same bird, which is a part of the prophesied end of days agenda.

When we ended our conversation, I headed to the computer to do some work, when I hopped on social media for just a moment . . . To my amazement, another contributor had posted his own bitstrip commentary on the very subject we'd covered.

I know there are others hearing this same thing.  American politics are truly a distraction from finding solutions!  Soundness will not be coming from the Oval Office, but discovered 'round the kitchen table!

Heartwarming

In school, whether I liked the teacher or not, math was always one of my favorite subjects, but I fell in love with this math teacher!

Morning Chores

Usually this section is reserved for just something good going on in the world around us.  Personal news like this would typically be in Holy Homesteading, but this really was one of those "right out of left field moments."

This morning as the "girls" gathered 'round their feed pans, Avalon was a noticeable absence.  She's the only nanny on the place that hadn't yet kidded and it's certainly not like her to miss feeding time.  I went ahead and made my morning rounds.

Let me share a little something about critters.  For the most part, they are much  more independent than we humans like to think.  I knew if she was in distress she'd bleat, and all was quiet on the homestead, except the usual arguments over feed pans.

I peeked in each little shed as I made my rounds but all were empty until I looked into last year's garden pen.  There was Avalon still licking her little twins.  Everyone was fine, so I finished up the chores and headed in with a nice flake of orchard grass hay.  One twin was obviously more adapted to her new surroundings.  I dried the other one a bit and nudged it toward "the food supply."  Again, I don't intervene unless there appears to be a problem.  Upon checking a bit later, I realized one twin had a system.  She found the teat first, then when little sister showed up, she'd move over to the other one and the little one wouldn't get much.  Baby goats can drain the mom in record time!

This same thing happened some years back, but I was pretty new to the homesteading gig then.  The mama didn't reject either baby, she just didn't coordinate the feeding plan. so I bottle fed the smaller one twice a day, but left them both on mama.  As soon as I'd return her to the pen, she'd go right for mama, so then I realized I'd need to make sure the more aggressive one didn't drain mama, when I brought the little one in.  That resulted in twins in the house every morning and evening for weeks, feeding one and making the other one wait.

I'm smarter now.  Today when I saw this taking place, knowing the larger more aggressive one had just eaten, I brought her in for a nap in my office.

The littler one stayed with mama for her undivided attention and the next round of milk.  It's worked
beautifully today, and this evening both little babies were one on each side with tails happily flagging.
